Using Media Center? You no longer need a token. In the web dashboard, go to Sources → Add a source → Plex and click Sign in with Plex. Plex opens its own sign-in window, and Media Center finds your server and every address it has — nothing to copy. The manual method below is still the way to get an X-Plex-Token for other Plex tools that ask for one.
For Media Center: Sign in with Plex
You sign in on Plex's own page (app.plex.tv), never on ours, and approve Media Center. Your households then play with your server's own access key — not your Plex account — and Media Center keeps the server's addresses up to date by itself. To disconnect it later, remove Media Center under Authorized Devices in your Plex account.
For other tools: find your Plex token in Plex Web
- Sign in to Plex WebOn a computer, open app.plex.tv and sign in with the Plex account that owns the server.
- Open any movie or episodeBrowse to a library on the server you want to connect and open any single title.
- Choose Get Info, then View XMLClick the … (more) menu on the title, choose Get Info, then click View XML at the bottom left of the window. A new browser tab opens with the title's XML.
- Copy the token from the address barIn the new tab's address bar, find X-Plex-Token= and copy everything after it, stopping before the next & if there is one. That string is your token.
The address you copy it from looks like this — the token is the highlighted part:
https://192-168-1-20.abc123.plex.direct:32400/library/metadata/1234?X-Plex-Token=AbCdEf123456GhIjKl
Keep it safe
A token grants the same access to your library as the account that created it, so store it like a password, and give it only to apps you trust.
Next: watching away from home
For your households to play from your server outside your home, Plex Remote Access has to be on — see how to set up Plex Remote Access, then connect Plex to Apple TV.
